From the Pastor: "Spiritual Disciplines"
By Adam D. Gorman
As I wrestled with my decision of what to write for my first “From the Pastor,” what stuck out most were spiritual disciplines. The topic occurred to me as I jogged around “Suicide Hill” in Central Park, but the verdict was finalized as I put on a pot of coffee to sit down and write. I remembered that not everyone who attends a church has spiritual disciplines. Or that what some people do, they do not actually consider spiritual, even though it really is. As we look forward to the season of Lent, I want to remind each of us to actively and consistently have and add spiritual disciplines in and to our lives.

Pastors' Reading Corner
Each month, one of the ministers will note some of the books that he or she has recently read. Inclusion on the list does not imply endorsement; the hope is simply that you will find your own reading informed by this column.

What Rebekah Hutto has been reading:
Left Behind and Loving it: A Cheeky Look at the End Times by D. Mark Davis.
Whispering the Word: Hearing Women's Stories in the Old Testament by Jacqueline Lapsey.
The Water Hole by Graeme Base.

The Pascal Forum
By Michael Lindvall
In a recent issue of the Record, we learned of the grant that the Brick Church received from the John Templeton Foundation to engage our congregation in a two-and-a-half year conversation on one of the hottest topic of the day – the intersection between religious faith and modern science. Our Pascal Project is organized in three steps, each one designed to widen the circle of learning and conversation within – and perhaps beyond – our congregation. The first step saw the assembling of a small group of about 30 interested members and friends, many with science or theology backgrounds, into the Pascal Forum. This group has met several times for both conversation and in an intense two-day educational “primer” on the topic. We are now expanding this important conversation to phase two.

The Brick Church Phonathon

Deacons' Tuesday Night Dinner Program
The Brick Church Deacons would like to call your attention to the Jan Hus Tuesday Night Dinner Program, which takes place the first Tuesday of every month from October to June. We are currently looking for new and existing Brick Church Members to volunteer on the evenings of Feb. 7, March 6, April 10, May 1 and June 5 with setup, serving meals and cleanup. Evenings at Jan Hus are truly a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

Day of Discipleship
On Saturday, March 3rd, the congregation will be gathering and going out into the city to help those in need. By volunteering with a variety of agencies, we will show our love for God by working with and for God’s children. Join us for this day of fun, fellowship, food, and Christian Discipleship!

Brick Children: Ash Wednesday Seed Planting
All congregation members, children included, are invited to participate in the Ash Wednesday dinner and seed planting. Prior to the 7:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday service in the Chapel on Feb. 22, congregants are invited to gather in Watson Hall at 6 p.m. for a simple meal of soup and bread, followed by seed planting. Seeds are a symbol of Lent, since they are seemingly lifeless until they suddenly begin to bloom.

Bible Presentation for Third Graders
Every year, The Brick Church Children’s Ministries Committee presents Bibles to third graders. As Christians in the reformed tradition, we believe that the Bible is the witness to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As God’s word to us, the Bible forms our life together and guides our belief and actions.
