Who is involved?

Infants through toddlers may be taken to the nursery on the Youth Floor, where paid sitters and parent volunteers supervise.

Children age two through seventh grade attend Sunday School.

Our wonderful Sunday School teachers and volunteers are parents, retired people, single people, and highs school students who are members of The Brick Church.

What do the children learn?

The Sunday Church School program uses two different sets of curricula. Most classes use Seasons of the Spirit, a Bible lectionary-based, fine-arts focused curriculum designed for churches that value spiritual growth, tradition and liturgy, Biblical understanding, social justice, inclusiveness and the special gifts of children. For more information, see www.spiritseasons.com.

Children in the fourth and fifth grades use a Presbyterian curriculum entitled "We Believe," which surveys the Bible over two years. "We Believe" helps older children learn to read the Bible with heart and mind as they prepare for Confirmation and church membership. This year's class will study the New Testament.

How does the schedule work?

The Sunday Church School schedule offers consistent classroom time to all children, while allowing families to worship together and children to participate in Communion.

Regular Sunday School Days
11:00 a.m. – Children ages 2 and 3 begin class and do not attend the worship service.
11:25 a.m. – Children 4 years old through seventh grade go to class after the children's message during the worship service.

Family Sundays
On Family Sundays, usually the first Sunday of the month, children in first grade and above remain in worship for the entire service. This way they can participate in worship and partake of the Lord's Supper.

Volunteer to teach
Our Sunday School program depends upon the dedication of more than 100 high school and adult volunteers who serve as teachers, assistants, and music leaders.

Lead Teachers commit to teaching one Sunday per month. They go through teacher training and plan lessons using our chosen curriculum. Teachers are provided with notes for each lesson as well as craft preparation and a seminarian-led teacher study each Sunday.

Assistant Teachers fill in as needed in the classrooms and help with craft projects, snack distribution and crowd control. We ask that parents enrolling their child in Sunday School commit to assist at least one Sunday during the year.

Music Leaders work with Amanda Smith, the Director of Children's Music Ministiries. They visit the nursery and Sunday School classes through 5/K and lead the class in song.

High School Assistants are members of our youth groups who help with craft projects, snack distribution and crowd control.

If you are interested in lead-teaching, or in assisting as either a parent or high school student, please email Rebekah Hutto
If you are interested in Sunday School Music, please email Amanda Smith
