Candlelight Carol Service
An Advent Service of Lessons and Carols is held at 4 p.m. in the afternoon of the third Sunday of Advent. Readings from Holy Scripture unfolding the drama of salvation are woven into the singing of Advent and Christmas Carols by the congregation and Chancel Choir. The 2011 Candlelight Carol service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 18.
Christmas Eve Candlelight Service
A Christmas Eve service of worship is held in the Sanctuary at 11 p.m. on the night before Christmas. The service includes a sermon, the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Communion and a ceremony of candles, symbolizing the gift of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, and our opportunity to bear that light into the world.
Christmas Day
A service of worship is held in the Chapel of the Reformed Faith at 11 a.m. on Christmas Day. The service includes a sermon and the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Communion. For 2011, since Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, this service will be held in the Sanctuary.
Ash Wednesday
On Ash Wednesday, worshippers mark the beginning of Lent with one of two identical services of worship held at 7:30 in the morning and 7:30 in the evening, both in the Chapel of the Reformed Faith. Each service includes a brief sermon, the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Communion and, for those who desire, the imposition of ashes.
Maundy Thursday
On the Thursday before Easter, a service of worship is held in the sanctuary at 7:30 in the evening to mark Jesus Christ's Last Supper with his disciples and to remember his suffering and impending death. The service includes a sermon, the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Communion, and the traditional service of tenebrae, which uses the symbol of progressive darkness to mark the betrayal, passion and death of Jesus Christ.
Good Friday
On the Friday before Easter, a service of worship is conducted at 12:15 p.m. in the sanctuary to remember the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. For nearly 90 years at The Brick Church, this service has been centered on the singing of Sir John Stainer's beloved oratorio, "The Crucifixion" by our Chancel Choir and soloists.
Easter Sunday
On Easter Sunday morning, two identical festive and joyous services of worship are held in the Sanctuary at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., each preceded by 30 minutes of special music, in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Each service includes a sermon, the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Communion, and the participation of the Chancel Choir, organ and Brass Choir.
