From the Pastor - 'Five Questions'
christy.jpg

As you know, I will complete my time at The Brick Church at the end of this month. On May 5 at the Annual Meeting of the Congregation and in accordance with the Presbyterian Book of Order, I asked the congregation to concur with my request to Presbytery that my call be dissolved, and I am thankful that the congregation agreed with such great support. At that time I also made some remarks, which I will share again with you here.

Since I announced the news of my plans for next year, I have been deeply blessed by your kind words and well wishes. Many of you have asked me questions, and there are several questions that have risen to the top as most commonly asked. So let me address those questions for a moment and then say some words of thanks.

Pastors' Reading Corner

Each month, one of the ministers will note some of the books that he or she has recently read. Inclusion on the list does not imply endorsement; the hope is that you will find your own reading informed by this column.  This month, Michael Lindvall shares his picks.

A letter from Grace Lindvall

I am excited to share with you news that I have been offered an opportunity to serve as a Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) in Kenya. The Young Adult Volunteer program is a part of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s Global Mission Council. YAV volunteers work at 16 sites nationally and internationally. I will be joining over 70 YAVs across the world, five of whom will be serving with me in Kenya.

“Wow!! What a difference a day and an ambitious team of magical elves can make.”
- Kayla, the librarian at Children’s Storefront

On the morning of May 1, more than 140 Brick Church members gathered to serve their neighbors in need. In the process, they learned together, laughed together and perhaps grew in faithfulness together.

Confirmation 2010

Congratulations to all our Confirmands who were confirmed as active members of The Brick Church on May 23. We are so proud of you and grateful for your presence in this community. Many thanks to our amazing parents for all their support and assistance, and especially for planning the Confirmation reception. Special thanks go to this year’s Confirmation Sponsors: Elder Ellen Clark, Deacon Len Carrell, Youth Outreach Worker Ryan Reid, and Seminary Student Ministers Jonathan Crooms, Michael Isaacs, and Margaret Mitsuyasu. This process would not be possible without you. All glory be to God for another wonderful year with the newest active members of The Brick Church congregation.

Youth Mission Days

Every summer high school students are invited to participate in the mission work of the church. In the past, we have traveled to Maine and to London and Scotland. Mission Work Days are this year’s “Mission Trip,” designed to give students an experience of serving our neighbors in the name of Christ in and around New York City.

Adult Education Year in Review

By Sarah Wetenhall
With the summer season here, the Adult Education Committee thought it timely to reflect upon our 2009-2010 programming. It is our mission to encourage discussion and critical thinking about our faith by learning about church history, theology, spirituality and current events. We hope that you found our efforts to be educational and even inspiring.

Summer Bible Studies

Presbyterians in centuries past worked for the right to have the Bible in our hands and in our own language. They believed that by reading Scripture together and talking about what we read, we can grow in faith and knowledge, guided by the Holy Spirit. How privileged we are to have the Bible in our hands!

Adult Education will once again host SuBS this summer beginning on Sunday, June 6, at 10 a.m. in the Dining Room on the Third Floor of the Parish House. Please join us around the table throughout the summer months as we study and discuss together the assigned Lectionary passages for each Sunday.
