Report of the APNC
September 16, 2011
In December 2010, the Associate Pastors Nominating Committee (APNC), composed of Charlie Higgins, chair; Sonia Batten, Len Carrell, Buddy Crutchfield, Janet Ley, Helen Lynch, Peter Manning, Kent McKamy, Margaret Pennoyer, Debbie Seraphim and Adam Zachar, began their work of searching for and calling two Associate Pastors. Senior Minister Michael Lindvall was also active in the search process, attending meetings and spending time with all of the candidates called to New York for in-person interviews.

The process began with developing Church Information Forms (“CIFs”) to describe each role, following closely the recommendations of the Mission Strategy Report approved by Session in 2010. Once the CIFs were approved by Session and by the Presbytery’s Committee on Ministry (“COM”) they were posted on the central PC(USA) job database. Ads ran in two national PC(USA) publications and the CIFs were posted on our Brick Church website. In addition to these external advertisements, the APNC sent out 200 inquiries to “friends and family” of The Brick Church, including Seminaries, asking for referrals and leads.

We received 131 Personal Information Forms (“PIFs”) from prospective candidates, and each PIF was read and analyzed by the APNC. Over a period of three months, the original 131 PIFs were researched, screened and narrowed down to 23 group telephone interviews. Candidates were also interviewed on campus at Princeton Seminary. By late May, the APNC had narrowed down the 23 to 12 candidates who were invited to New York for in-person visits. The visits consisted of small group dinners, meetings with Rev. Lindvall and Rev. King, tours around the neighborhood and, finally, an intensive interview with the entire committee.

By late June, after a prayerful and thoughtful discernment process, the APNC enthusiastically and unanimously voted to call Adam Gorman to the position of Associate Pastor for Youth and Family Ministries, and Rebekah Hutto to the position of Associate Pastor for Christian Education and Discipleship. Rev. Lindvall and Rev. King are supportive of the decisions reached by the APNC and are looking forward to welcoming Adam and Rebekah to the staff at The Brick Church, if the way be clear. On September 6, the COM approved both of our candidates for Associate Pastor; they will appear before the full Presbytery meeting on September 24.

It is our great pleasure and privilege to introduce Adam and Rebekah to the congregation of The Brick Church. You will find a summary describing each candidate included below.

Thank you for your prayers and support throughout this intensive search process. We feel blessed to have met so many talented individuals in our denomination who truly have a heart for serving God’s church.

Faithfully submitted,
The Associate Pastor Nominating Committee
