From the Pastor:
A Long Road, Almost There
By Michael Lindvall
When they were younger and stuffed into the backseat of our old Volvo station wagon for a long road trip, about every 20 miles one of our three children would dependably inquire, “Are We There Yet?” The question got old after a few hundred miles and it was always a sweet pleasure when their mother or I could finally answer, “We’re almost there.”

Brick Church has been on a particular road trip for more than three years now, and what a joy it is to say, “We’re almost there.” It began when leaders in our congregation identified a wonderful challenge right in front of us – The Brick Church’s census of families with young children was ever growing. Indeed, we had and have one of the largest Sunday Schools of any urban church in the country.

Pastors' Reading Corner
Each month, one of the ministers will note some of the books that he or she has recently read. Inclusion on the list does not imply endorsement; the hope is simply that you will find your own reading informed by this column.

Birk and Hoke Duo in Concert Oct. 17
By Keith S. Tóth
Last December at the Candlelight Carol Service, our recently restored 1898 Steinway C Concert Grand piano had its debut. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Wilson, III, this historic piano underwent a thorough restoration by Klavierhaus, one of our country’s premier piano restorers.

Don and Lynn Wilson have generously provided funding for a trio of recitals to inaugurate our restored Steinway. The Wilsons expressed a strong interest in featuring both the Steinway piano and our acclaimed Anderson organ in these recitals. To that end, Brick Church has invited artists that are widely recognized as both concert pianists and organists.

The Wilson Family donates new climber to the School
By Lydia Spinelli
When the children returned to school and went up to the roof for the first time, they had a big surprise. Don and Lynn Wilson, who donated our 1995 wooden play structure, have replaced it with a new, state-of-the-art structure, designed by Brett Haddaway of Design for Fun.

The new structure has more climbing elements to challenge the children. It also has an open design so the teachers can supervise more easily.

APNC nominates Adam Gorman to be first Associate Pastor for Youth and Family Ministry
The APNC of The Brick Presbyterian Church in New York has voted enthusiastically and unanimously to nominate to the congregation Adam Gorman to be our first Associate Pastor for Youth and Family Ministry.

Gorman was raised in Westfield, N.J., where he was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.  He was heavily involved in the youth group, and served as a Deacon and on the Nominating Committee to select the new Youth Minister for the Westfield church.  In high school, he attended The Morristown Beard School and later studied Marketing at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa.  He had not yet considered ministry as a career option but it was something he loved to be a part of.

The “3G Network” — Grace, Gratitude and Generosity
The 2012 Stewardship Campaign
The Stewardship Committee is grateful to the Brick Church congregation for faithfully and generously supporting the life and mission of the church in 2011.

The Brick Church’s operating budget is derived from the church’s endowment fund, reimbursements for services provided to the school and others, and our pledges.  Our congregation’s stewardship contributions are The Brick Church’s single most important source of funds. Your pledges allow our church to thoughtfully and responsibly create a budget that funds the worship, education, building maintenance, administrative costs, and outreach and benevolence activities that touch so many.

World-renowned African musical group performs Oct. 16
By Michael Lindvall
On Sunday morning, Oct. 16, The Brick Church’s service of worship will include music by Afrizo, an extraordinary African musical group from Daystar University in Kenya. I first heard Afrizo when I was speaking at Scots-First Presbyterian Church in Charleston, S.C. several years ago.  When I learned that they would be doing their third U.S. tour in 2011, I inquired as to whether they might include a New York visit.  Their fall tour this year includes 28 engagements from California to Connecticut.

*****************
Afrizo will be in New York City for three nights: Oct. 15, 16 and 17.  We are in need of hosts to offer housing for two students each for these three nights. Please contact Lena Tharp if you can offer a spare room. Thank you in advance!

Halloween Blood Drive
Donating blood is literally giving the gift of life.  As fall begins and the need for blood products becomes more critical, The Brick Church will be hosting a Halloween blood drive to aid the New York Blood Center in fulfilling its mission of providing our community with the highest-quality blood transfusion products and services.  The Brick Church’s ongoing commitment to the NY Blood Center helps the center to supply nearly 200 hospitals in our area. Blood donation is a significant way that we can support those in need in our community, and it takes a minimal amount of time. Please join us in saving up to three lives with one donation.  A photo or signature ID is required.

Membership Meetings in October
Four times per year, The Brick Church hosts a series of membership meetings. At these informational meetings, neighbors, visitors and members of The Brick Church can learn about Christian faith and worship, the Presbyterian tradition, and the history and life of The Brick Church. Anyone who wishes to join The Brick Church must attend all three meetings in the series. Visitors are also invited to attend the series as a way to learn more about The Brick Church. Further, current members of The Brick Church are encouraged to join these sessions as a way to show visitors that we are a faith community that constantly seeks to learn and grow together.
