From the Pastor:
By Michael L. Lindvall
The worship style of The Brick Church may tend toward the traditional, but the theme of the 2012 Stewardship Campaign is as current as the latest Blackberry or iPhone. The three Gs at Brick Church are not those of the icon on your mobile device, however; they are much older and more important. Indeed, “Grace, Gratitude and Generosity” are as venerable as the Christian faith itself.

Pastors' Reading Corner
Each month, one of the ministers will note some of the books that he or she has recently read. Inclusion on the list does not imply endorsement; the hope is simply that you will find your own reading informed by this column.
This month we look at what Michael Lindvall has been reading.

Stewardship 2012: Grace, Gratitude and Generosity
“Grace, Gratitude and Generosity” is this year’s stewardship campaign theme, and your Stewardship Committee believes it captures the spirit of The Brick Presbyterian Church.

Last year, in the midst of a challenging economy, the members of The Brick Church rose to the occasion. Church leaders worked hard to contain costs by stabilizing healthcare costs, trimming utility costs, deferring building repairs and maintenance, and – for the first time in many years – reducing mission giving. The congregation responded to the need: more than 65 percent of families increased their Stewardship pledges and more than 80 percent of households participated in the campaign. These efforts helped us not only meet but exceed last year’s Stewardship goal.

Financial Planning can benefit Brick Church and your family
By Pete Palmer
Each month, The Record will provide information on how you may benefit The Brick Presbyterian Church and your family through informed financial planning. The Brick Planned Giving Committee will try to provide you with a variety of helpful sources through this medium.

One basic resource available to all is the Presbyterian Foundation. The Foundation website puts at your fingertips a comprehensive estate planning agenda, from making a will to creating many other forms of planned gifts. The site enables you to review and compare different strategies for structuring retirement income, creating gifts during your lifetime, and establishing end-of-life legacies. It allows you to calculate accrued dollar amounts to the charity and to your family. All this can be done at your own pace and in anonymity. The site is fully comparable to and competitive with similar sites provided by major investment firms and universities.

Brick Church receives grant for science and religion study
By Michael Lindvall
Late this summer, The Brick Presbyterian Church received a major grant from the John Templeton Foundation to fund an investigative and educational program in our congregation exploring the relationship between science and religion. The intellectual intersection between science and religion continues to be one of the most important areas of conversation and conflict - both for our faith and the larger culture.

Called “The Pascal Project,” this endeavor will unfold over the next two years in three stages: First, a deeply interested small group will learn and explore the central issues in the interface between science and faith. This group will include members, friends and ministers of The Brick Church and will be called “The Pascal Forum.”

Advent Potluck Supper
The Advent Potluck Supper, a cherished and long-standing tradition at The Brick Church, will take place in Watson Hall at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4. The Potluck Supper directly follows the Children’s Service of Lighting the Creche and leads to the Park Avenue Carol Sing and Tree Lighting.  All are welcome; we ask only that you make a reservation and bring a food contribution. For reservations, call the church at 212-289-4400 or email rsvp@brickchurch.org. Watson Hall seats only 250 people, so please reserve your spot early. Food contributions are an important part of the evening. Those with names A-H, please bring an entrée, from I-P, a salad, and from Q-Z, a dessert.

By Steve Elliott
Elves wanted! On Saturday, Dec. 10, The Brick Church will host 100 children and their families from The Jericho Project for a fun-filled day of games, music, arts and crafts, and the traditional gift shopping malls. Santa will be dropping by, but with the North Pole already running at full capacity, he is in desperate need of “elves” and volunteers in The Brick Church community to make Watson Hall abuzz with holiday cheer.

Adult Education: Yoga and the Psalms
By Shyanne Roeloffs
Yoga and the Psalms is a six-week course geared toward centering ourselves and building physical and spiritual strength and balance through this joyful and sometimes trying holiday season. Shyanne Roeloffs and Summer Saunders will teach a different series of Yoga poses each week, moving through key phrases found in the Psalms from our liturgical calendar. The relationship that most of us have with the Psalms tends to be located primarily in our analytical mind, but a key component of this course is to utilize the movement in the poses to clear space in the mind, allowing the meaning of the Psalms to penetrate on a deeper kinesthetic level.

Adult Midweek Bible Studies
All are welcome to join the Men’s and Women’s Bible studies. These studies are intended to help members and friends learn more about the Bible, and no expertise is necessary. The group explores and discusses the Biblical text and its meaning for our lives, and we get to know one another in the process. Participants in both Men’s and Women’s studies are encouraged to bring their own bibles, though bibles will be available at the meetings. Questions? Contact Rebekah Hutto.

Meet the Seminarians!
By Rev. Chase S. Hunt, Seminary Program Coordinator
Continuing tradition, we welcome three seminary student ministers to our staff for the 2011-12 academic year. Deborah Mahaney, Andy Rice and Margo Walter are all in their second year of study and will be working at The Brick Church two days a week. On Wednesdays, they come to the church for staff meetings, a period of study with our ministers (referred to as Colloquium), and meetings with Brick Church committees of their choosing.  Each student works with two committees. On Sundays, they teach the Sunday Church School teachers prior to worship and assist in the leadership of the Confirmation Class following worship. Two seminarians also participate in the Sunday worship service on a rotating basis.  In addition, each of them will preach at the 7:30 a.m. Wednesday service in the Chapel on three occasions during the year.  Please join me in welcoming them to The Brick Church.
