| | From the Pastor: New Beginnings | | By Rebekah Hutto | | Friends,
It is clear to B.J., Hannah Ruth, and me that God has brought us to a church that is eager to make us a part of its family. This December, as we embark on the holidays together, as we celebrate God’s ability to do new things amongst us, we are—each of us—called to remember that Advent is a time of new things. The season of Advent is a period of waiting, anticipation, and expectation, and yet, on one hand, much of my anticipation has passed. The waiting has ended, and our new life together has begun. | | Read More... |
| Pastors' Reading Corner | | By Adam Gorman | | Each month, one of the ministers will note some of the books that he or she has recently read. Inclusion on the list does not imply endorsement; the hope is simply that you will find your own reading informed by this column.
What Adam Gorman has been reading: The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay is an intriguing novel about a little boy named Peekay growing up in Africa with everyone and everything against him. Despite being bullied and having no one for support, Peekay fights to survive and does not allow anyone to break his spirit. With a little inspiration from a stranger... | | Read More... |
| Candlelight Carol Service | | | | By Keith S. Tóth On Sunday afternoon, Dec. 18 at 4 p.m., join us in the candlelit elegance of The Brick Church’s sanctuary for our annual lessons and carols service featuring the professional voices of The Brick Church Choir under the direction of Keith S. Tóth. Organist Daniel Kirk-Foster will accompany the choir and play seasonal music on our renowned Anderson organ and Steinway Concert Grand Piano. You will not want to miss this special musical event, a Brick Church tradition that has delighted so many for decades. Admission is free. Due to the reflective nature of this service, parents with young children should avail themselves of the childcare provided during this service. If you are interested in childcare, please email the number of children and their ages to Caitlin Sparks. For additional information, contact Keith Tóth. | | |
| Volunteer at the Deacons’ Christmas Party Dec.10 | | | | By Steve Elliott Elves wanted! On Saturday, Dec. 10, The Brick Church will host 100 children and their families from The Jericho Project for a fun-filled day of games, music, arts and crafts, and the traditional gift shopping malls. Santa will be dropping by, but with the North Pole already running at full capacity, he is in desperate need of “elves” and volunteers in The Brick Church community to make Watson Hall buzz with holiday cheer. | | Read More... |
| Don't Forget Your White Gift! | | | | By Doug King On Christmas Eve at the 4 p.m. Christmas Pageant and at the 11 p.m. Communion service, the deacons will be continuing the tradition of collecting White Gifts. Congregants are asked to bring toys for the East Harlem Urban Center and new white t-shirts and socks for the Jan Hus Homeless Outreach and Advocacy Program. Please wrap donations in white paper and label them with a description of contents. Gifts will be placed in the chancel at the Pageant and in the Narthex at the Communion service. Please join us in this generous tradition of The Brick Church and help make a difference for those in need this winter. For information, contact Doug King. | | |
| Christmas Cheer at the Lindvalls' | | | | All members of the Brick Church family are invited to an evening of Christmas cheer at the home of Michael and Terri Lindvall, 17 East 89th Street, on Tuesday evening Dec. 13 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This warm, festive event has grown to be a much-anticipated Christmas tradition among the Brick Church community. Cocktails and heavy hors d'œuvres will be served. The Advent and Christmas season has long been a time for Christians to celebrate together in feast and fellowship, God’s gift to us in Jesus Christ. Please join us as we celebrate the season together with fine fellowship, festive cocktails, and tasty treats. Don’t miss this evening of warmth and fellowship as we celebrate the season with other members of the Brick Church community. Please RSVP only if you plan to attend, by emailing Lena Tharp or by leaving a note for her at the Front Desk. | | |
| Stewardship vs. Planned Giving: What is the Difference? | | | | By Pete Palmer
What is Annual Stewardship? The commitment from each member
to support the church with cash contributions for the year ahead. This
enables the church to meet its budget. It supports the ministries and
operations of The Brick Church, all of the programs in which members
participate, the more than 40 outreach programs in our community and
around the world, and the operation and maintenance of our church.
Approximately 60 percent of The Brick Church budget is funded by these
annual stewardship pledges.
What is Planned Giving? Typically, a planned gift may range
from a current gift, to a direct bequest in your will, to using a gift
vehicle such as a donor-advised fund, a charitable gift annuity, or a
charitable trust. Each of these vehicles can channel funds to the Brick
Church endowment. Any gift other than a Stewardship pledge may be
designated as a planned gift. | | Read More... |

| Adult Education: “Advent, a Time of Waiting” | | | | By Charlene Kuo
For the season of Advent, Adult Education will host a three-part
series entitled “Advent, a Time of Waiting.” Advent which means “the
coming of something momentous” is a time of waiting and preparation for
the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas.
Traditionally, the theme of teachings during Advent is
to prepare for the second coming of Christ by commemorating his first
coming at Christmas. To follow this tradition at The Brick Church, on
Sundays Dec. 4, 11 and 18, the Brick Church seminarians will lead a
series that focuses on the season of Advent through the eyes of faithful
individuals who waited. | | Read More... |
| Adult Midweek Bible Studies | | | | All are welcome to join the Men’s and Women’s Bible studies. These
studies are intended to help members and friends learn more about the
Bible, and no expertise is necessary. The group explores and discusses
the Biblical text and its meaning for our lives, and we get to know one
another in the process. | | Read More... |

| Membership Meetings in January | | | | Four times per year, The Brick Church hosts a series of membership
meetings. At these informational meetings, neighbors, visitors and
members of The Brick Church can learn about Christian faith and worship,
the Presbyterian tradition, and the history and life of The Brick
Church. Anyone who wishes to join The Brick Church must attend all three
meetings in the series. Visitors are also invited to attend the series
as a way to learn more about The Brick Church. Further, current members
of The Brick Church are encouraged to join these sessions as a way to
show visitors that we are a faith community that constantly seeks to
learn and grow together. Please contact Linda Thompson
if you plan to attend the October meetings, or if you would like more
information. Childcare is available for the Sunday meeting and upon
request for the Saturday meeting. | | Read More... |
