Maundy Thursday worship April 18 7:30 p.m.
April 18 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm EDT
On Maundy Thursday, a service of worship is held in the sanctuary at 7:30 p.m. to mark Jesus Christ’s Last Supper with his disciples and to remember his betrayal, suffering and impending death. The service includes a sermon by one of the Brick Church pastors, the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Communion, and the traditional service of Tenebrae, which uses the symbol of progressive darkness to mark the betrayal, passion and death of Jesus Christ. After each reading during the Tenebrae service, the Chancel Choir presents a choral meditation on the reading. After each choral meditation, lights are progressively extinguished in the Sanctuary. The final reading ends with complete darkness in the Sanctuary and the tolling of the bell 33 times to represent Christ’s death. Our most somber service of the year at Brick Church, this profoundly moving and beautifully service is the Holy Week equivalent to our Advent Lessons and Carols service.
