Presbyterians, the Revolutionary Spirit, and America’s Original Sin

February 26, 2017 @ 9:45 am - 10:45 am EST

In this lecture, Dr. Moorhead discusses the ways in which Presbyterians participated in and contributed to the spirit of the American Revolution, then examine how they approached the question of slavery (America’s original sin). Dr. Moorhead’s examination of this topic goes up to the General Assembly’s 1818 pronouncement on human bondage.

James H. Moorhead is a graduate of Westminster College (Pa.) and received his MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary and PhD from Yale University. An ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church (USA), he has taught at Princeton Seminary since 1984. He has won the Brewer Prize of the American Society of Church History, was an associate editor for religion of the twenty-four volume American National Biography published by Oxford University Press in 1999, and serves as senior editor of The Journal of Presbyterian History. His research continues to emphasize nineteenth and twentieth-century American Protestantism with special attention to mainstream Protestant denominations since the 1930s.
