Thematic Approach to Studying Scripture – June 9
June 9 @ 9:45 am - 10:45 am EDT
By Tom Robinson.
Most know about The Brick Church’s lectionary approach to Scripture, meaning that every Sunday a minister selects one or two Biblical texts from a group of four to read in worship and serve as the basis of the day’s sermon. Studying Scripture can also be approached one book at a time, selecting one of the 69 Books of the Bible to read through from start to finish. This has worked well for the Men and Women’s Bible Study groups. There is third approach: choosing passages from several books of the Bible based on a specific theme. Such an approach can add a broader perspective and a deeper dimension to a particular topic or question of faith. In transitioning to Summer Bible Study and in anticipation of Pentecost, the Adult Education Committee will try this new approach during the first two Sundays of June. The leader of these sessions, Tom Robinson, has selected passages on God (June 2) and on the Holy Spirit (June 9) for participants to read and discuss around the table in small groups and then with the whole group across all the tables. Each discussion topic will add to the other but will stand on its own each week. Who said we Presbyterians never try something new?
