Worship & Arts at Brick Church: Fall 2022
December 18, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm EST
October 16th at 11:00 AM – Festival of Hymnody
Brick Church’s superb Chancel Choir is joined by the Youth Choirs, brass, and percussion to lead us in this beloved worship service. The choir will sing the opening chorus of J. S. Bach’s exuberant Cantata No. 172 and Thomas Tallis’ Pentecost motet, “Loquebantur variis linguis,” and the entire congregation will make a joyful sound singing hymns in praise of the Holy Spirit. Brick Church is grateful to Don and Lynn Wilson for their generosity in making this annual tradition possible.
October 20th at 7:30 PM – Raymond Nagem, organ
Minister of Music Raymond Nagem will present his inaugural organ recital on Brick Church’s acclaimed Casavant organ. The program will feature music by J. S. Bach, Sergei Prokofiev, and Louis Vierne, as well as the world premiere of a new organ work by Dr. Nagem.
Program:
- Fantasia and Fugue in G Minor, BWV 542 – J. S. Bach
- Music for Children – Sergei Prokofiev
- Variations on a Villancico (world première) – Raymond Nagem
- Symphony No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 20 – Louis Vierne
November 20th at 11:00 AM – Britten: Rejoice in the Lamb
Benjamin Britten’s 1943 cantata Rejoice in the Lamb is an enchanting celebration of God’s presence in all facets of creation. From lions and tigers, to flowers, to the letters of the alphabet and the instruments of the orchestra, all the world joins together in singing Hallelujah. On this Cantata Sunday, the Chancel Choir, soloists, and Organ Intern Isaac Lee will bring the splendor and whimsy of this cosmic vision to life.
Christina Kay, soprano
Annmarie Errico, mezzo-soprano
Ongama Mhlontlo, tenor
Nathaniel Sullivan, bass
Isaac Lee, organ
December 18th at 4:00 PM – Candlelight Lessons & Carols
Brick Church’s Lessons & Carols is modeled on the famous service that has been sung at King’s College, Cambridge since 1918. By flickering candlelight, we tell the Christmas story through readings, carols, and anthems, and we proclaim the good news of light amid the winter’s darkness. This year’s service features the world premiere of a new choral piece by New York composer Laura Jobin-Acosta.
