Stock Gifts | Brick Church

There is a potential tax advantage to donating appreciated stock to Brick Church, instead of cash. If you have held the stock for more than one year, and if you itemize deductions, you are entitled to a tax deduction for the full fair market value of the stock and you avoid paying capital gains taxes on the appreciation. Many members of the Congregation take advantage of this every year. The Church will sell the stock promptly, and credit the contribution against your stewardship or capital campaign pledge as you direct. Please speak with your tax advisor about this potential benefit.

It is important that you send us a copy of the Stock Gift Designation Form, below. If you are instructing your broker to transfer stock to Brick Church through DTC, that is the only way we know who the gift is from. The DTC transfer process does not allow the donor’s name to be sent on to receiving broker. Every year we receive unidentified stock gifts and we want to be sure your gift is appropriately credited and acknowledged.

Stock Gift Instructions

• Sending securities via DTC transfer

DTC Transfer is the best method. This transfer is quick, smooth, and does not require the paperwork necessary for stocks received in physical form.

1) Merrill Lynch DTC number: 8862 (new number effective Feb. 2018)

2) The Brick Church’s account number at Merrill Lynch: 850-03255

3) Inform The Brick Presbyterian Church about your donation indicating how you wish to designate your gift. You can email the stock gift donation form to Meagan Hooper.

If more than one purpose, please specify by either dollar amount or by number of shares how you wish to allocate your gift. Please sign letter with your full name as it appears on the stock certificate.

• Securities received in physical form should follow the procedure below:

Registered in the name of grantor: (donor of stock)

Merrill Lynch will need the following original signed documents:

1) A letter of authorization from grantor gifting securities to The Brick Presbyterian Church account number 850-03255 and specifying the quantity of the gift. The letter must be dated and specify purpose (ex. Pledge or Capital Campaign) of the gift. If more than one purpose, please specify by either dollar amount or by number of shares how you wish to allocate your gift. Please sign letter with your full name as it appears on the stock certificate.

2) An original signed stock power or if certificate is registered in the name of the grantor, the grantor may endorse the certificate. (Grantor should not fill out any specifics on the back of the stock certificate. This will be handled by Merrill Lynch’s securities processing department.)

Note: Stock power and security certificate should be sent in separate envelopes and mailed separately. This is recommended for security purposes.

Registered in the name of The Brick Presbyterian Church:

Merrill Lynch will need the following original signed documents:

1) Non-Corporate resolution

2) Stock power must be signed by an officer of the corporation listed on the resolution.

Many corporations will match your gift to the church. Please call The Brick Church at 212-289-4400 to request our Tax ID Number.
