About the event

The “24 Violins” was the official string band of the French court at Versailles. The distinctive sound of the orchestra came from the way the parts were distributed, with three inner lines played by different sizes of viola, and with the outer parts (the melody and bass) weighted more heavily. On top of that, every member of the band was impeccably credentialed; for its time, it must have been an incredibly disciplined group.

Following the success of their previous “24 Violins” concert, the elegant and dynamic early-music ensemble The Sebastians will reassemble its largest ever group of strings to reimagine the sound of this grand ensemble, performing music by Baroque composers Jean-Baptiste Lully, Georg Muffat, and Arcangelo Corelli.
