About the event

Charles Theodore Pachelbel: Magnificat

J. S. Bach: Jesu, meine Freude, BWV 227

Caroline Shaw: and the swallow

Josef Gabriel Rheinberger: Mass in E-flat, Op. 109

The Chancel Choir explores many facets of musical joy in this concert, starting with J. S. Bach’s heartfelt motet, whose title translates as “Jesus, My Joy.” The expansive and exuberant Mass in E-flat for double choir is the masterpiece of Josef Rheinberger, and one of the most beautiful works of the Romantic period. Also on the program are two American works: Charles Theodore Pachelbel’s Magnificat, performed at New York City’s first recorded public concert in 1736, and Caroline Shaw’s jewel-like setting of words from Psalm 84.
