Philippians 4 contains some of my favorite verses in the Bible. Paul reminds us that the Lord is near. He calls us to rejoice, to bring our requests to God in prayer, and to give thanks. Paul does not promise that every prayer will be answered in the way we expect. He offers this promise: “The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).

In Philippians 3, Paul asks us to consider what we count as valuable. He had credentials, accomplishments, and a record of observing religious rules. Yet he came to regard them as nothing compared with knowing Christ.

Paul sets a high bar for followers of Jesus. He asks the Philippians to share the same love, be united in spirit, and consider the interests of others alongside their own. Can we live this way through our own strength?

When we began Philippians, we met a letter full of joy, written by a man in prison. Now Paul shows us more of what that joy looks like when circumstances are difficult. Paul has not been forsaken by God. Even in confinement, he sees opportunities for the gospel to be shared. He relies on God’s strength and purpose, trusting that God can work through circumstances he would never have chosen.

In this episode, we begin exploring Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi. Paul writes with warmth and affection, even though he is a prisoner under Roman guard. His letter returns again and again to joy while also calling believers to humility, unity, and a life shaped by Christ.

Jesus often used familiar images to teach about the kingdom of God. To listeners who knew the rhythms of sowing and harvesting, a field threatened by weeds would have been easy to picture. But this parable is more than a story about farming. It invites us to consider evil, judgment, God’s patience, and the right time for the harvest.

In this passage, Jesus addresses the very heart of the problem. The crowds had just witnessed His stern rebuke of the religious leaders, exposing not only their lack of inward devotion to God but also their failure to truly obey God's commandments. No amount of handwashing can change our character. God looks at our hearts. Jesus explains that the human heart is the ultimate source of defilement. His message to both the crowd and His disciples is that they should be far more concerned about their inward condition than about the supposed defilement that came from eating with unclean hands or eating foods considered unclean.

In Judaism at that time, many would likely have concluded that Lazarus's miserable condition was the result of God's punishment for sin, while the rich man's wealth was evidence of God's blessing. Riches were often believed to be a reward for obedience, while suffering was viewed as punishment for sin. The rich man did not open his hand to the needy. At the same time, we are not given any indication that Lazarus was particularly pious. The contrast in the parable is not based on one man's goodness and the other's wickedness.

What if we see the Samaritan as a picture of Jesus—the One who turned expectations upside down by associating with those on the fringes of society, extending healing to the marginalized, and dining with sinners? The Outsider who humbled Himself to stop and minister to the wounded traveler lying in the ditch after everyone else had passed him by. Not only did He stop, but He bandaged the traveler's wounds, took him to an inn, and authorized the innkeeper to charge His account for anything the wounded man needed. Extravagant generosity. Undeserved grace.
